The Computational Neuroengineering
Laboratory, Neurolab
belonged to the Department of Chemical Engineering and
Food Engineering of the Federal University of Santa
Catarina, EQA / UFSC for approximately 20 years.
During this period, the EQA / UFSC was the only
Brazilian Chemical Engineering Department to own a
laboratory aimed at the area of neuroscience. While
being linked to the EQA / UFSC, in the Neurolab were
developed 20 master's dissertations and 10 doctoral theses.
The lab main focus is the application of chemical
engineering fundamentals in the understanding of brain processes.
The laboratory focused mainly on studies of the visual system
of mammals and in the modeling of brain cells such as neurons
and astrocytes. The approach is based on mathematical modeling
and computational simulation. The Lab has agreements with
experimental laboratories, enabling the participation of
its students in data collection in order to validate the
mathematical models.
For these activities, the laboratory has a
technical-scientific staff highly qualified with a broad
and well-equipped computing infrastructure.
Currently, Neurolab, no longer located at UFSC, continues its
research work on the themes associated with neuroscience. A new
developing theme is the acquisition of energy consumption data in
order to control the operation of electrical appliances and schedule
substitutions and maintenance services. In this theme Neurolab is
associated with Startup Deep Environment
Artificial Intelligence
